THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

for the Text Analysis and Visual Data project, I analyzed Arthur Doyels novel "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, as i found on the website "Project Gutenberg". I am familiar with this novel as I have read short stories, comics and seen movies telling the tales of the famous Sherlock Holmes.

the Novel The Adventures of Serlock Holmes", is set in the late 1800's around the time the famous Jack the Ripper was on his killing spree. The book takes place in London England in a time when law and order is overruled by brutes, villans and cereal killers. Holmes is A brilliant London-based "consulting detective" who is famous for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to take almost any disguise and his forensic science skills to solve difficult cases.

the first analysis what I did was collect the metadata from the website "Project Gutenberg". For this I used the information obtained from the metadata lab to complete my list.

For the second part of my blog I used Wordle. Using information from the "Wordle Blog Assignment" I used my skills to create an image analysis of the book "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". Using Worlde as an image tool for analysis, i will talk idea I am trying to portray through the Wordles textual collage.

Not surprisingly the main, and most frequent word used was the name "Sherlock" the main character in the book who investigates and solves the most dangerous and ubscene mysterys in the heart of London England. The second most frequent word was  "Mr." than after that was "One" than "Man. What i liked about the word freequency for the supporting words (One and Man), they showed the whole premise of the book. Serlock Holmes was a geneous master mind of his time, he alone was the only man in London with the ability to solve the most impossible mysterys. Sherlock was a master of solving lifes tuffist riddles but he was still a "Man" with problems and issues. Sherlock was well known for his addiction to drugs, his disgusting hygene and his terrrible relationships with women. Sherlock was not perfect, but thats what made his caracture so memorable and believable, making him a fictional legend.

For the graphic design color I choose "chilled summer" which gives a more mysterious and lerky feelng the the wordle text which portays Sherlocks adventures perfectly by painting an image solving mysterys and dark, dirty deeds.

For the graphic design font i choose "Powel Antique" which reminded me of London script and the way Sherlock would write.

layout: Rounder edges, Mostly Horizontal
Font: Powel Antique
Colour: Chilled summer
Most Frequent Word Used: Holmes
Words Displayed: 150

Summary:

I think Wordle compliments "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" quite presisely. Wordle gives us supporting words that stand out like one and man that paint a picture of the outline/premise for us. the word "one" can stand for Sherlocks talents, but it can also stand for his feeling of seclusion from society due to his originality. the word "man" cam stand for Sherlocks faults, even though he is a geneous he still has human emotions and problems like everone else.

For the third part of my blog I used a tool in the "Many Eyes" program called the "Word Tree". This program allows you to break down words into specific sentences by clocking on your choosen word. Unlike Wordle, which uses word size and frequency as a way of digitaly analyzing text, the Word Tree allows to go more into depth making it a supporting data collector for Wordle.

I took the most frequent word from Wordle (Sherlock) and used it as my basis for for creating my Word Tree. The program instantly connected to Holmes which is Sherlocks last name. after that i went more into depth and choose the word "mystery" as my basis word. This created an image that would ultimately ruin the book, with this word I could easily map out  the summary of the story in my head.

Summary:

"Word Tree" is a great tool to use to map out a more specific idea of what a story is about. If you were to use your own words Word Tree would give you the tools neccesary to figure out and correct repeated words, even repeated setences. I found Word Tree complimented Wordle by creating a less visualy pleasing but more precise web analysis of the book "The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes".

  • Why did your group choose the (type of) data/texts that you did?
My team (Helo) choose a Dutch poetry book on hymns because the data seemed interesting and  as a good example for our tool (ManyEyes).
  • What parts of the tool did you use?
"ManyEyes" is a multi use tool that can be used to: analyze text (word cloud, word tree), value tables (bar chart, bubble chart), see relationships among data points ( matrix chart, scatter point), see parts of a whole (pie chart) and even create maps (country map). My team used word tree to analyze our text. The word tree created a neat separation of the words that could be easily accessible.
  • What did you find out about these texts?
Using the word tree tree tool on the poetry document I found their was allot of; and, though, literacy and poetry words being used. The cool thing about word tree is, you can specify on a word it shows you all the sentences that word is used in.
  • Which elements of the tools produced the deepest kinds of analysis (i.e. which were the most useful)?
Because "ManyEyes" has so may tools for different task, depending on what task analysis you need to be done, whether it be, analyzing text or collecting and graphing data "ManyEyes" has a tool for it. This diversity gives you options making it easy for you to go into depth into your analysis.
For me the word tree was most helpful for a written document because it allowed me to go into depth of each sentence of each word. This allowed me to understand which words were being used too often or not enough, alos it created a easily accecable outline of the document.
  • Provide a brief description of what you plan to do for your Text Analysis and Data Visualization Exercise.
the book I am using to collect data  is "Life Of Pi", an interesting novel about a indian boy who finds himeself, after a ship wreck, stranded on a boat with a zebra, hayena and tiger. With this book i plan on using ManyEyes to visualy display words inharmony, emplacement and in frequency. I will either word clowd or word tree visualize the data.

Text 1.  “What’s the Point of a College Education"

 Highest frequency word: Education.

first “content” word: College.

What words appear most frequently?
College, Education, Job, Facts, Particular and Different.

Deleting words: When I deleted the two biggest words (College and Education),  Wordle made "job" the biggest word. Reading and understanding the article, making "job" the biggest word would not agree with the preparation a University or College education gives towards being hired for a job/carreer.

Text 2. "My Blog"

Highest frequency word: Students.

 first “content” word: Longboarding.

What words appear most frequently?
Students, longboarding, metadata, data, education and Xacti.

Deleting words: Surprisingly after removing the three biggest words (students, longboards, Metadata) I could still obtain enough information with the words left to figure out what my blog is about!

Text 3. "1984"

 Highest frequency word: Winston.

first “content” word: Party.

What words appear most frequently?
Winston, One, Part, Time and Even.

Deleting words: I deleted: Winston, O'Brien and One, the Wordle left me confused. "1984" is a book about mind control. I would guess the Wordle now represents someones facebook comments on the party he/she had last night.

Text 4. "Commencement Speech"

Highest frequency word: Reply.

first “content” word: Posted

What words appear most frequently?
Reply, Posted, Replies, Private, New, Post and UFE

Deleting words: I deleted: Reply, Provate and posted. The speech looks more like a blog. No big words about the speeches content came up as one of the big words.

Text 5. "Representative Poetry Online"

Highest frequency word: Thou.

first “content” word: English

What words appear most frequently?
Department, English, Well, Thou, Department, Poems

Deleting words:  I deleted: English and Department, the document looked like a critique of someones poem. The words given make it very easy to figure out what was the topic of the document.

Text 6.  "Wall To Wall With Ethan Landau"

Highest frequency word: Like.

first “content” word: Comment.

What words appear most frequently?
Baron, Like, Comment, Ethan, LandauGabe

Deleting words:  By deleting some of the big words i found that the wordle became useless. What was left was a bunch of dates. It seems like allot of the conversation was said in May.

Text 7. "Personal Essay"

Highest frequency word: Problem.

first “content” word: Solution.

What words appear most frequently?
Problem, Cars, Solution.

Deleting words: The document was on the cynics point of view of switching over to electric cars. When i took out the two biggest words: Problem and solution, the document took no side on the pros and cons of electric vehicles.

Text 8: "Thugz Mansion"

Highest frequency word: Place.

first “content” word: Mansion.

What words appear most frequently?
Place, Mansion, Spot, Heaven.

Deleting words: When I erased: Place and Mansion, the song still resembled gangster rap. Smaller words like chorus and verse make it easy to guess this is a song even without the two biggest words.

Text 9.  "Using Tag Crowd"

The big difference between "Wordle" and "tag crowd" is that "Tag Crowd" allows the user to specify the amount of words are shown on the screen, Wordle does not give the user this option.

Over all Wordle allows the user to be more creative with the over all product, but is looks everything when it comes to helping someone with their work? Although Tag Crowd, visually is less pleasing it gets the job done more efficiently than Wordle would.

I would like to see both "Wordle" and "Tag Cloud" to give the option of giving optional words for the big ones, so when it comes to writing an essay or document you can supplement the option the program gives you for that unwanted, overused word.
